I realize Rufus was just a sub,but if he didn't want to participate you could have gone out and recruited anybody to fill in one spot it's not like they would have had to participate just be on the team.

Rufus was a core, we just didn't feel like we needed him until the finals. Also, US isn't a guild that just randomly recruits people for the purpose of filling out a team for the GST, so that isn't a possibility really.
Next season we should have Prado and David available so we won't need Rufus to fill in for anyone.
