i can't find the fast shaking grass guide, but basically if you see shaking grass make sure it's at least 3 spaces away from you, and not on the edge of the patch of grass you're on. if no grass appears (it has to be fast shaking, don't go near slow shaking grass or anything) get out, re-use the item (it won't break your chain) and look for fast shaking or shiny grass.
