The downloadable version is free if you own one of the 6 Nintendo Selects games!
Just go on Club Nintendo and register your 3ds and Selects game (Mario Kart 7, 3d land, animal crossing etc). The 3ds PIN code is in the box, not the serial on the back of the system.
The club Nintendo code in your game case is the one you'll use.
After registering, you can get a free download code for x or y!
