If the leaderboard is going to continue to reset on a seasonal period, after about a month it's going to have a minority lead of substantial quantities at the top. It'll be those players who encompass the factors of a decent active sparrer and the leaderboard will serve its purpose in that way. However, I don't know if this will make sparring more appealing or vibrant for everyone else.

I don't think any leaderboard system will be able to bring people to sparring, because anyone who doesn't already spar has probably already got it in their head that they won't be able to compete under any ruleset. I do hope it makes the current sparring community queue more fearlessly and suffer leaderboard anxiety a lot less, because that was too big of a problem.
That's why I also suggested the spar hats stuff. I think that'd at least interest people to some extent.
As the season goes on, people like Sarah (on the iDevice side) will be a 5-digit number ahead of the #2 score. I'm almost positive of that, because she wins a lot and is insanely active (6000 wins in the last month, I think). I want to be able to think that's a problem, but it isn't. Someone like that simply spars more and better than the majority of others, therefore I can't think of a reason why they don't deserve it. But ya, like you said, to someone who comes in two months after the season has started and sees players with 30k points, and they start at 0, I'm sure they see no interest in sparring for the leaderboard.
But, I think that cons of the old leaderboard outweigh that:
- Rating could be manipulated and glitched
- Alternate accounts were everywhere
- You could spar 30 times and sit a high position without sparring for another 2 weeks

I really don't believe in the 'everyone's should be a winner' stuff, but the board is not going to seem accessible until it resets every 3 months. There's no opportunity to take the top people down without rising to them. The PK leaderboard also suffers from this but allows players to feel short term validation through its daily and weekly sections. Might be worth taking out the device-specific listings and doing that here.

I agree @ "everyone gets a trophy" thing. The Glicko system worked 100% perfectly if the community was responsible enough to let it do its job naturally.
I'd be 100% behind a weekly, monthly, and seasonal (or all-time?) points board. I'm just down for whatever gets more people sparring rather than obsessing over how many points they might lose.
