Actually, the myth of 2012 came from the Mayans.
The Mayan calendar stopped at 2012. Architects misread this and thought it meant the end of the world (The Mayans were incredibly smart--they had each and every day planned on the mayan calendar, and it has been accurate). While, it wasn't that the world would end in 2012, it was then the Mayans thought their gods would leave them to take care of themselves.
2012 is fake.
