Actually it depends on what you're after. If you want to play in a higher tier game, and fast, becoming really good with one hero is the way to go. You'll be exposed to higher skill brackets and learn a lot about how you should play the game in general. You can always improve other heroes down the line.
I did this on Dota 2 and I would play against some competitive players even though I only knew how to play like 5-6 heroes really well.

Thing is you need to play each hero 1-2 times so you know how to play with/against them. predicting your enemy is the key to victory.
