Before getting into SAO, Kirito was what you would call a loser. He spends his time all alone and has even given up on practicing Kendo, all the while neglecting his family. There was also the time in SAO where Kirito went through depression, but the anime never went over it cause they're stupid. SAO S1 Ep. 3 Spoiler (doubt anyone here hasn't watched it though)

SAO S1 Ep. 3 Spoiler (doubt anyone here hasn't watched it though) Spoiler When Kirito join the guild who all died in the trap, Kirito went through a stage of depression, but unlike jumping off the world, he wanted to die by the game. Kirito went to go on solo dungeons that took a group to do in the lead groups in hopes that he would die, alas he couldn't. During the Christmas part when he went to confront Klein, he purposely angered them so that they would fight him and hopes that he would be killed by them, but the other guild intervene, and Kirito solo the Christmas dungeon. He was planning the next dungeon until he received the song which you all saw in the anime and decided to fight for everyone.
