It might have just used the seteffect function. Not sure if that's the right one (Graal functions aren't the best documented).

I don't think the function used initially had alpha controls, but essentially what it did was change the color palette of the tileset. Whatever function was used, I remember being able to emulate it using something else (seteffect?).
