You should just go straight forward. I mean, if he's not a gamer, will it change anything for you? If so, it's better to find out and keep going before you "waste your time", sorry for the choice of words there. And if he's a gamer.. you'll probably be more into him.

Not sure for how long you know eachother because I didn't read every post and those I read I almost forgot by now, but trying won't damage anyone. Just ask him out once you feel the right moment is there. Otherwise something happens, and you'll regret not doing so. Overcoming yourself, no matter what his reaction/reply is, is already an achivement.
