That doesn't really contribute much to the lag.

Actually, it does contribute to the lag when 25 players received 100 1k hat (gif).
But the thing that makes it unfair even without the lag, are the 1k guilds(like beg for mercy).
I swear, they should allow you to have only 3 1k hats per account maximum.
