I lucid dream sometimes as well and since he's offline I'll throw in my two cents.
For me, I experienced it a lot as a kid even when it happened by accident which I think occurred because I'm a very logical thinker so my brain could easily tell what was false and what was true. I'm not certain but the fact he frequently experienced it as a child does sound like it's something that came naturally to him as well.
One thing that definitely helps is keeping a daily routine where you do 'dream check-ups' this is basically doing something that would happen only in reality and not in a dream. A good example would be comparing clocks throughout the day, as in a dream no clocks will tell the same time. Every day when you wake up go through a mental checklist and eventually this becomes first nature to you so in a dream it becomes easier to realize you are dreaming.
There's a lot of very detailed guides on how to do this and they can explain it better than me so try looking up lucid dream help and start reading various articles.
Whatever happens, be careful with it. Living in your own little universe can have poor affects on your mental health if done without taking caution. Due to lucid dreaming I also have frequent sleep paralysis which is very bad too but I think the reward is worth the risk.
