OP sounds like one of the many, many towering formats that would be better than the current one.
My idea of another better towering format would be something like the leader assigning 3-5 players to be the guild's towering squad and holding a tower for a consecutive amount of time depending on how easy the tower is to defend (e.g. MoD fort = 10 minutes, Sardon's tower 30-60 minutes) in exchange for a token. Then tokens can be later used to purchase prizes. Or whichever top guild(s) accumulates the most tokens during a seasonal time frame receives a reward.
Sorry if my idea was mentioned before, but honestly it is really fun, challenging and doesn't require a large input of people's time. It also encourages activity.

IMO, the way you make towering competitive is by making it seasonal and giving prizes to only the top 3 guilds after every season
I'd probably full-time tower and drop singles sparring altogether if it was this way
That's too cutthroat for 99% of this community though and everyone would cry
The current "everyone wins if you just spend enough time" format gets boring to me pretty quickly

The problem with the current format is that it stresses people to be active (usually for 1-2 months), so making it seasonal wouldn't really help.
