Jihad was a concept used by Muslims under Muhammad's rule to justify the expansion of an Islamic empire and war against non-Muslims by excusing it as their peoples' struggle - supposedly supported by God.

It's no coincidence that radical Islamic terrorist organizations like ISIS use the term.
