Just to clarify - yes, I was referring to the military component of Jihad, as that is what these extremists use as justification.

Nowhere in my comment did I state that Islam was or is the only violent religion - it is my personal belief that religion serves the purpose of accruing political power, wealth, and influence over a large mass of peoples. This leads me to hold the belief that religion's purpose is not only the unification of peoples, but also the division of peoples.

Extremists exist in every faith, in every civilization.
As I mentioned to a few friends earlier, "it's 2015 - not 1315."
