No, it shouldn't; gender absolutely doesn't matter and I whole heartedly agree.

As for people losing their cool in a debate, I agree—however if people are following you around, stalking & harassing you to target an argument, that's not even a debate anymore and hitting them is self defense.

Hint hint Ivy, and some other trolls; I may entertain you following me around and attacking my religious beliefs unsolicited, calling me crazy and thinking you're effing cute & funny—and I may have argued with you a few times despite the fact I think you're god awful annoying and your incessant giving me reputation points isn't fooling me—but you play this shenanigan in real life and talk about hitting me, I may not be a violent person but you better watch your back because I've lost control a few times and kept the blood on my walls as an ornament; thought about licking it off a couple times just for pleasure. I love the taste of blood.

And, again, if we're going to be sharing spankings—for real, let's get some liquor, a little duct tape never hurt anyone—light a few candles and make it a party. I don't see why that's so hard to fathom. But know this: I've seen twice as crazy, twice as big, twice as talented—twice as rich, and twice as vicious as you before, and I don't think you're being cute. Been struck, jumped, raped, robbed, and threatened too many times by crazy ass soulless, worthless members of society to even flinch at turning around and smashing you right back.
