I think icons would be better for indicators than colors, so I agree. I feel like different ranks should have different icons to represent their tier. Not sure what they would be though, but I think it would be best to avoid the standard military ranking.

I was thinking maybe chess pieces or something like that, or even something completely original(which would be more difficult).
