Because we are people. Not a thing. When you just call us a, "transgender" over a, "trans/transgender person" it's found offensive to quite a few people in the trans community.

From what I know, being transgender has many different meanings for people who actually are. It's delicate & difficult to please everyone with articulation. I saw someone transgender on Big Brother who didn't like being called transgender at all. I forget what she said she thought she was, but it was different than "transgender." I think it's just something you have to learn about for each individual for how they would like others to think/talk about it.
