Uhhhhh?
People always use 'female' 'male' instead of 'female/male + person' so it shouldn't be any different with transgenders. Never once seen a male or female complain about it, just looks like a dumb thing to over react too.
It's just how common english works, in no way do people say it because they don't think you guys are people.

I understand how it could be considered offensive. If you say "Hey, that's a black!" That black
guy might be offended. Same with saying "A gay," and some other labels. I'm not sure if it's because of the lack of controversy surrounding each term that decides if it would be offensive or not. Saying "An African American" doesn't sound offensive at all, while saying "A black" does.
I think people are too overly-sensitive a lot of the time, especially when it comes to race now. But with something as new as being transgender is to society, and it's revolution, I can understand being offended in that situation since I'm sure many people would say "A transgender" in order to display a lack of respect, or even lack of recognition of them being human beings too.
