Whenever it was said that there were "lots of updates planned", the key word was planned. There has always been a lot of ideas that were approved, but nothing ever came of them. There's not a lack of staff, but there is a lack of scripters. No one on the server really has adequate knowledge to do the projects that people want done. Even with Tashkin as manager, scripting was still the biggest problem. The only project that I know of that may still be in the works is a prokect that I believe Alpho is scripting. It's apparently pretty big, but it seems to me that it still should have been finished by now. I wouldn't expect anything big to come out for a while.
