these are never a good idea, tho you could restrict the map size . the problem is that people wonder out cause its the only way to protect they're area from griefers and theives . by taking away that option you are just convincing them they should find another server . even with protections they are still at risk cause not everyone is given one . not to mention you need an op to set one when there's hardly ever one on, and no one is gonna trust someone that has a protection no matter what their rank is cause of the bad apples that place the seeds of mistrust . that's why i liked the region mod where players could place the protection themselves . but some are afraid people are just gonna run around placing their own protections on every ones stuff .
