Not going to school is breaking the law?

It's called truancy, any intentional unauthorized or illegal absence from compulsory education.
Mainly applies to elementary and high school but yes under law it's considered illegal, it provides the school with the ability to legally hand out punishment.
Some states in the U.S hold the ability to revoke any students driving license/permit if they do not attend class, and they also have the ability to fine students which I guess is a common occurrence in the U.S
