What they did was obviously wrong, but this guy could have done so many things to prevent it from happening. As a college student, I assume he's educated about the behavior of North Korea so stealing a propaganda poster, as an American, is going to piss off people who are clearly hot-headed and volatile. He didn't deserve what he got by any means, but no one should want to go to North Korea and if you do then the last thing you should even consider is breaking the law.
He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor and instead got death. Based on the torture I imagine he went through and would have continued going through, death may have been the ideal route. I'm sure they only decided to ship him back to us once they realized that his death was imminent.

everyone with him said he had not stolen a propaganda poster, or never saw him steal anything of the sort and that it's very unlike him to do so. it was probably a cover up by NK; like everything else was.
