Obviously the government would increase security measures to ensure that illegal firearms do not enter the country.
If a criminal has a gun owning one yourself won't help because its probably too late for you anyway, comply with their wishes.
The amount of firearms in circulation will decrease as they are confiscated and the prices for them will go up due to limited stock therefore preventing most criminals from obtaining them.
Crimes still happen without firearms however running away from someone wielding a knife is much easier than with a criminal with a firearm.Law enforcement also has a higher chance of not being killed as they will have access to firearms.

How will the government increase security measures to prevent illegal firearms from entering the country? Don't you think they're already trying to prevent that? Restricting guns would only increase the demand in the black market. Guns, drugs, and alcohol are all in the same category. Government prohibition only means more money for the black market.

They should restrict or prohibit the sale of weapons, that's the first step! I think you don't need to carry a gun in a shoot-out. That wont help you to defend yourself because you will probably be killed swiftly. If the arms are already here, why do you want to buy more arms? That will only cause more deaths. They can increase the security in general, then they can focus on the real criminals. Those criminals will be arrested and taken into custody. We can control our actions, but we can't control the actions of other persons. There are many people trying to get money through the suffering of millions of people and there are also people with mental problems. That's the reality in which we live. There is no turning back.

Correct. There is no turning back. We have plenty of guns in circulation and allow people to own and carry them. You can't go back and restrict guns now.
Not to mention the U.S. Constitution allows you to have guns and that can't be changed except through the amendment process... The argument to completely prohibit guns isn't even an argument worth wasting time on. It's unrealistic.
