Anyway, I know that .png is a basic graphic type that is straight forward. .gif seems to be different

.png is actually quite advanced, but since you're saving both as 8bit for graal there isn't much of a difference aside from .gif supporting animation. .gif is nice though since it's limited to 8bit thus you don't need to fool around with the bit settings when you save it.
Another format which is seldom used since it's basically an old .png with animation support is .mng. I wouldn't worry about it though.
