To be fair the whole shield code thing itself is ugly and inefficient.
An out of game solution like Taylor Richaards could not possibly be better in terms of efficiency, surely having players close the game to go to a different app or website is a problem?
Obviously it is easy to point to a box farm in someones house and say it is ugly, but over time as people have gralats farmed in their codeshops they gain money to spend on nicer furniture to creatively decorate (hopefully). This should be more interesting to the player than an online database of codes.

I made about a dozen codes and made a game out of this same mechanic at one point... It was a lot of fun.
You can also use strange bricks creatively to make booths where players go in and get their shield changed. Pretty sweet.
