You play the role as yourself, experiencing the things you can't. You are merely controlling a robot that can live a life you will never. Level Grinding, learning new moves, it's quite obviously an RPG. A close counter part to Pokemon, is a spin off of the First JRPG, Dragon Quest. The game is called Dragon Quest Monsters, and it's pretty fun! It was remade on 3DS..not in the states though. Dragon Quest hasn't been so successful in the states, so to experience this, go GBC hunting.

I'm going to go against sources and say Pokemon is more primarily an adventure/turn-based steategy game with secondary, subtle RPG aspects. You control very little elements of the game and have zero influence on how the storyline plays out. Sure, you can technically define it as an RPG since it contains the core elements of traditional RPGs, but at heart, you do pretty much no role-playing. The story is too linear and inflexible for it to be called "role-playing".

And just because you don't play as yourself doesn't mean its an RPG. When I take on the "role" of generic US army soldier in Battlefield, is Battlefield an RPG? No.

It may be considered an RPG, but you are way off course on your reasoning there.

Calling Pokemon a RPG would be absolutely accurate. Calling CoD a RPG would be "way off course." In every description of the game I find by credible sources, including GameFreak, it is referred to as an "adventure role-playing game."
