Multiple @'s was censored back in early 2010 because players would spammed it all over the Burger Refuge picnic area, making it hard for other players to have conversations. I think it's actually one of the first words/symbols to get censored on iClassic o_o. They should uncensored it though 0:.

If you're receiving 5 messages a second, say of a length of 50 characters, wouldn't that have a drastic impact on performance? If you calculate the censor serverside, it would only have to be calculated on the server, and would work for everyone with the censor on the same-you only need to calculate it once per message, so it isn't like walking where its unique for every character and where latency causes issues. You then send one of 2 messages to the player: the censored one, or the uncensored one. The only thing clientside filtering would do better(efficiently) would be allowing you to censor words you don't like(I can finally censor "YOLO" and "Swag"!) By having an optional swear filter(turned on by default to avoid angry parents), people wouldn't try to avoid it, and people with it on wouldn't have to deal with obscene words all the time, and those with it off won't have to deal with the strictness or inconveniences caused by it(I can't talk about the game Combat Arms without going to certain measures to avoid the filter, part of it is picked up as a rude word) |

If it's clientside you wouldn't need to do all of those complex filtering algorithms. Clientside means that people can pick and choose if they want stuff filtered. That means people won't need to try to avoid the filter. The reason the current filter is as complex as it is is because it is trying to also catch people avoiding it. No need to avoid it = very, very simply filter check.

1. They're new and don't know how to turn it off. 2.They want to upset someone so they try to avoid the filter to upset them. |

Clientside filtering needs to be transparent. So: 1) It wouldn't filter your own chat, even if you have censoring on. Why? Because YOU'RE the one typing it, so there's no point in filtering your own text. This means even if you have filtering on, you wouldn't be aware if it was filtering it for others or not. This greatly decreases the desire to avoid the filter. 2) There would be absolutely no way to tell if someone else is filtering your chat or not. Along with the first point, filtering becomes a very background thing that only helps those who WANT it to help, and doesn't drop hints to other players who is filtering and who is not, and if even their own chat is being filtered. They don't need to know, as it's about what OTHER players see, not what they see. |
