I'm not really experienced in this field, but what I'm using right now are some metallic green Skullcandys I found on the ground a while ago (unopened, too, was pretty nice 0.o), and these have lasted me 3 years and counting. Pretty nice compared to the crapples I had before. I also have some AKG k240 Studios that I found cleaning out my garage and my dad said I could keep. They're over-ear though, which is nice some times but annoying at other times. Are these any good for use in home?

Also, I'm looking for some good earphones, what's your best recommendation for $30-$40? My ipod is a second gen touch though, so that might not have awesome sound anywho.

The AKG K240 is actually a really solid set of budget headphones that would be good for home use. For the earphones, I'm going to need some information like music preferences and such. Don't want to recommend bass-heavies if you're going for rock or something.

What above else: Sound quality (Good bass and I can clearly understand the words being sang) and portability.

Oh forgot to say closed back sorry. Been looking for headphones for a while would really appreciate the help. My friend told me the JVC explosives are pretty good but you seem to be an expert.

Mostly rock, but I also like punk and sometimes random stuff that I don't like anything else in the genre of. But classic and alt rock with some punk is what I usually like

I'm gonna point you towards the MEElectronics M9. It's a decently balanced headphone with a mid-bass focused sound that works out well with rock. I used to own a set of these a while back and I can't say I ever hated them.

Oh also what form factor are you looking for? In-ears, on-ears, around-ears, etc?

I think these should be good for you. I haven't tried them out personally, but since they're earbuds, they won't have microphonics which is a plus for running. I'm not entirely sure about sound quality, but if it sounds anything like the Sennheiser house sound, these should work for you.

I was a fan of the Audio Technica ATH-ES7 (you can call me an AT superfan), them being my first "entry-fi" set of portables. I'm kinda tired of rehashing stuff about AT's consumer-oriented house sound, so here's an excerpt of an actual audiophile's review of the headphones.

The ATH-ES7 provide a distinctly ‘fun’ sound signature that betrays Audio-Technica’s poising them for mainstream success. They’re heavy hitters in the bass department with a smooth and full-bodied low end. Extension is adequate and these can produce a good amount of bass rumble when prodded. The speed isn’t quite up to par with the HA-M750 and Q40s but the softer impact may even be preferable for some. They are certainly less tiring to my bass-sensitive ears. The midrange is slightly recessed but clarity is quite good and vocals sound more or less natural. There seems to be a small hump in the lower midrange response, which gives the sound some coloration. The treble is on the bright side but not fatiguing enough to be a problem. It’s quite upfront and very crisp and clear. They do a good job relating a track’s dimensionality but don’t quite manage an open and spacious sound -soundstaging is very close and intimate. Despite this I still find them perfectly enjoyable headphones when listening on the go.

Anyway I got my Sennheiser HD25-1 II today from UPS. ****in' love them, the first headphone purchase I haven't been disappointed by since my Audio Technica M50s. Was disappointed by the UE Triple.fi 10 (grew on me, didn't justify the $400 tag though), disappointed by the Beyerdynamic T50P, and the Audio Technica ATH-CKM500s (though it's the only IEM I have now, I miss my Triple.fi10).
