I recently went on to only find very few, with an incredibly slow spawn rate.. It was this past weekend. Not sure if that was a random bug for them to respawn shortly or not.

Just a guess by my part, but I think the amount of bugs on the island depends on how many people are there. I've noticed when I'm alone I can't any, but when there's a lot of people there I usually find a lot more. Just an educated guess.
