Raspberry Pi Questions
Well, I have really no idea what it is, but I've heard about it. What does it do? Why would someone want it? Is it useful? Just some facts? *Please don't link me to web pages, I just want to know more about it. It seems interesting. |

It's a pie..made of raspberries? Edit: oops, it's The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming. From http://www.raspberrypi.org/faqs Wait what the heck?! CREDIT CARD SIZED COMPUTER?! |

I read that actually, but why would you want a computer the size of a credit card, and without a case? This is odd.

Well it's a computer that's meant to teach computer science to children, so it's small and portable. I found this really interesting; ill do some more research and post back here Nvm, got really bored after 5 minutes. I know you didn't want links, but there's a lot of info on that FAQ, Wikipedia, and their website |

I have one :p It's basically a really small pocket sized computer with HDMI or video output, an ARM7 (I think) processor, and an SD card slot. Basically, you can buy the 512MB RAM or the other one. The 512MB costs only $35 and the other one costs $25. Another addition to the 512 one is that it has an ethernet port. Currently, the raspberry pi allows you to code python and play python games. Here's what I needed along side of my Raspberry Pi. Monitor with HDMI input (a TV works also if it has composite input) A USB keyboard and mouse A USB hub (optional) An SD card (6GB recommended) An Ethernet cable (to connect to the internet) An android power cable (to power it) A male to male audio cable (regular headphones work also, but this is used to plug in a stereo) A video cable (can be used for a TV if it doesn't have HDMI input) |

There's something similar, called an Arduino board, same principle, I've played around and coded one at a conference last year, they're not cheap, though!

So can I use it to code in C languages, or do I have to code in python? Why not use my laptop instead of a 'pocket sized computer'?

You can use it as a very sophisticated micro controller for embedded systems. A team is using one here for their project. You can code in any language you want. It's pretty much a fully functional computer with some sort of linux on it. |
