An' is exactly like 'a': it is used before a noun (person, place, or thing) to signal (indicate) a single, or one, person or thing that is unknown. The only difference is the spelling of the noun that follows it. So I got to disagree with you, "a" is the incorrect term to use.

You can pretty much replace "an" with "a" vice versa in any situation :p its just that were use to saying things in english so that it makes it easier for us to say it.

Don't you put an in front if a word that starts with a vowel? Instead of a?

When "u" makes the same sound as the "y" in "you," or "o" makes the same sound as "w" in "won," then a is used. The word-initial "y" sound ("unicorn") is actually a glide phonetically, which has consonantal properties; consequently, it is treated as a consonant, requiring "a." a union a united front a unicorn a used napkin a U.S. ship a one-legged man GO OWLS! |
