Nope  

You don't need to play to play but buying gold gives you added benefits and removes observer mode. Without gold you may find yourself been very limited in what you can do.  

Yeah if I am correct... You would have to pay 24 Euros (about 31 USD) for a full 8 months of Gold Subscription. That is what I always did, and I recently got back into PC  

just pay the cheap monthly one..its like 5 dollars i think.

The 8 month subscription deal seems more worth it if you do the math. But I can't play on pc cause' my computer sucks :-P  

If you played sometime before.. 2008 (I think? I forget when they introduced gelats) You could pay a one time fee of roughly 30-40$ and have lifetime Classic. Now it costs like 25$ or so for 3 months of gold.

However, you can be free and play as a trial (limited to 5 heads, no global guild tags, stuck with Graal###### account, and.. I think that's about it)

You can have a nickname in game, but not a community name.  

You get payed 300 Grelats a month if you work on a iPhone Server.
