Should making money off of Lets Plays be banned?
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Nintendo's decision to take revenue from all lets plays featuring their games. Many people hate this decision and say that it will take away a colossal amount of free advertisement from Nintendo, since Lets Plays of their games can encourage others to buy Nintendo games. I think these people are forgetting that it is just the revenue Nintendo is banning. Seriously, do you think that people like this should make millions of dollars a year just for talking while playing a game? Sure, some people might consider these Lets Players as comedians but they are directly using other people's assets as a source for their comedy.... to me its sort of like tracing someone else's comic and adding your own text in the bubbles.

Yeah but i think the main motivation of all the lets plays comes from the fact that they are getting paid from the views. So if Nintendo takes it away, there might be a reduction in all the lets plays of those Nintendo games because why else would you spend the time to record yourself talking over a game...

i dont think it should be, its not harming the company in anyway, growing them more so, and it provides a way for people to earn some money while doing what they enjoy.

I don't even see where there is a problem with this. People who do Lets Plays are providing entertainment and more importantly free advertisement for the specific game, and when it's someone like PewdiePie who has such a large audience and influence, revenue should not even be considered a problem. I know if I was a game designer, i'd be begging PewDiePie to make a Let's Play of the game I made, not banning him and others. |

Now, if they actually did something creative like Mystery Science Theater 3000, I wouldn't have a problem. But all people like Pewdiepie are doing is just making funny noises. I think Nintendo cares about how Lets Plays benefit their company (which is why they allowing people to still upload videos, just not make a profit), but they don't like how these people are actually making millions of dollars from their games when they don't deserve it. Its more of a pride thing. |

no @ op. i've been watching game grumps since day 1 and it's been an excellent source of entertainment. if they play a nintendo game, it's free exposure in front of 1m+ subs. if people want to watch it then that's that, even that ******ed ****head pewdie******. |

No, that's basically free advertising. There's no reason to be butthurt that they might make a little money off of it as long as it is giving your product or brand some attention. It's not like they're taking money away from you, it's just that they're making their own money.

Youtube would be a very boring place for me if all publishers/games took this route. I can understand not allowing people to upload say... just vgm music and getting money from absolutely nothing but uploading a file. However, while Nintendo may have made the game, I'm not watching a video to experience the game--I'm watching it to experience whatever qualities the commentator brings to their playthrough. |

This is Nintendo grasping at straws. It's not surprising seeing as they are on the decline as a company. |

People watch Let's Plays for the personality of the person, not the game. So I can't see nintendo losing any revenue off of this it's just advertising.

I watch the Yogscast. I would be very, very, very sad if they stopped getting money and then they eventually quit because of money problems

Lets play shouldn't be stopped, they provide entertainment and some indie games have really benefited from the lets plays, such as slender. (don't know if that is a viable example)
