Laptop problem
Ok so my Lenovo G505s has recently run into a large problem. After inputting my password for logging on I am greeted with a black screen with a movable cursor. No desktop. I am still able to run programs through the task manager but this is obviously a HUGE problem as I cannot see my desktop. Does anyone have any solutions? I'm running Windows 8.1. Please explain as clearly and simply as possible. Thanks.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/22/vu2ura2u.jpg (Unsupported image host)

Try opening the task manager, file -> new task (Run...) -> type "explorer.exe" and see if that pulls up your desktop.

try what mattkan said and see if that temporarily fixes things. Also, try running a repair of your windows installation if you have the disk for it. Chances are an OS file got corrupted or something. |

No disk. Any other solutions? I've tried a hard reset to no avail. Apparently I'm running explorer.exe... http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/22/ryhu5eje.jpg (Unsupported image host) |

I'm not sure how.. Yeah thanks for the help guys but I have a feeling this won't be fixed anytime soon. I'll probably just return it. What a shame. It ran Skyrim at High settings and I only paid 450 for it. Oh well. |

It looks to me like your explorer.exe is corrupted. Even if it's a display issue, you should still see the taskbar at the bottom. So you don't have media for a reinstall, huh? If you can get to the control panel (metro style, not in explorer), Windows 8 has a built in refresh option that should be able to take windows back to its original state. However, your explorer may be broken due to a virus! I doubt refreshing it in this manner would do much help unless you opted to have it really scrub all of your files while it refreshes, which you may not want to do if you have valuable data. Overall pretty cruddy situation to be in! |

Either way, it's a very easy thing to check for. Fn+display key on the laptop will toggle through the external display settings. It's worth at least checking into. |

Windows 8 does now extend the bar to all displays. But in case it doesn't, I think plugging in an external display into the laptop would be a good way to diagnose the issue further.
