Compared to all those other trash Shonen, Hunter x Hunter out-class all of them. unlike the other shonen series, it's not hated for being too mainstream and actually has the highest rating on MAL out of all the other shonen series, besides Gintama. Gintama and Hunter x Hunter are the only good shonen series out there.
The truth is though, thankfully I started watching this earlier on, today I would've never touch it.
Doesn't matter if it's the best of turds. Black Lagoon outclasses it in every aspect. Animation, Art, Story (because it actually ends!), VA.
MAL is a horrible representation for your argument. Not every single anime fan uses that site and actually votes, reviews, update their lists, etc. I never said Black Lagoon was more popular, only it was better (which it is).
Only thing I've been able to find regarding the ending, is that the author likes to take long hiatus breaks and the manga resumed this month.
I never saw Black Lagoon, so I can't compare it to HxH, but I can vouch that HxH has just an incredible script writing which comes into play with the story, even though the story itself has not ended, but the anime likely will take a break. The story does not need be over for it to be bad, it's not like Naruto or the other big three with their fillers. The characters are another thing that is just amazing about, not much generic characters and they've done very well in character development. I've recommended HxH to two of my friends and they've really liked the series as well. It's usually turned away, because of trash like the big three are bringing down the reputation of Shonen series.

When I started watching this show last year it was because my friend forced me to. Being your typical teenager I wasn't actually looking forward to watching an anime who's main character is some little kid with green short shorts on to match his green jacket. Actually I was plain out avoiding it calling it such immature things as "gay" and "stupid" when I hadn't even seen the first episode. Honestly after the first two episodes my opinion on this anime hadn't changed at all. My mind was thinking things like "How could my friend hype me up over this typical boring shonen ****". This is why I don't think you should be able to make a review for this anime if you haven't seen at least the first twenty episodes. The first few episodes can be very misleading when you look to the later episodes of this series; they give off a vibe that is very happy go lucky and light. But as a person who has seen really dark anime like Monster and read really dark manga like Battle Royale, I can confirm that this anime counteracts the initially blinding light with an equally blinding darkness. I may seem like a fanboy now but just a year ago I was like you and starting this anime was one of the most difficult decisions in my life, I was really bored and out of things to watch. That may be an exaggeration but it was one of my most difficult decisions when it came to starting an anime.
Story - 10
I'd say that Hunter x Hunter is almost equally strong in story/art/sound/characters and enjoyment but there is something really unique about the story in this show. Unlike shows like Fairy Tail and Naruto not every arc follows the same typical shonen pattern of a main villain with his entourage being introduced and the main character and his entourage battle it out against the villain and his entourage. The story of Hunter x Hunter is a journey, the typical premise of it is the main character (Gon) following in the footsteps of the father he's never met by becoming a hunter (which is a very general term in this anime, you can hunt practically anything gems/food/bounties). Though this is the starting premise a great majority of this show isn't focused on this, it's really just enables each arc to flow to the next giving legitimate story instead of pulling villains for the main character to battle out of a magical hat. The only element of romance in this anime is a boy following his dream and becoming stronger while simultaneously meeting different groups of people and creatures traveling around the world. I would say each arc is good on its own especially the arc the anime is currently on (Chimera Ant Arc) where our protagonist face an enemy with overwhelming power and since this anime doesn't allow for random deus ex machina power ups like Fairy Tail and Bleach we actually feel the overwhelming pressure that is on our protagonists. Also I forgot to mention that this anime does have its own secret special power like how Naruto has jutsu and Fairy Tail has magic, but to avoid spoilers I won't talk about it.
Art - 10
The art can be a little average initially but as the anime goes on it simple gets better and better. The fight scenes are done so well in the current episodes it reaches an orgasmic level that will surpass your epic meter and make you pace around your room for five minutes after its over. You can really see Madhouse at there best in this anime and I feel like they've noticed how much potential the manga has and they are drawing it all out and surpassing everyone's expectations. Some character designs are absolutely genius but I will admit some character designs could use a little improvement.
Sound - 9
The sound this show uses is absolutely genius.... sometimes. This show actually does have a problem with BGM that just don't fit for whats going on and it can kill the mood and make you question what they were thinking implementing this music at that moment. But when they use BGM's right, man do they really use them right. All voice actors perfectly fit the characters they play and thank god none of the main characters have annoying voices and they really bring these characters to life sometimes. One of the BGM I liked so much that I even downloaded to my phone and I listen to almost everyday
Characters - 10
Something that Hunter x Hunter may do better than literally every single other anime is the characters.
Gon - At first he comes off as a typical shonen main character in shorts but we gradually through out the show see the world change him into something badass and having a completely different attitude about things from when he started out.
Killua - A level headed cool kid who is extremely apathetic usually owning feigning emotions to trick others around him.
Kurapika - The classic avenger of the show, I won't give many details about him because I would like to avoid giving any spoilers regarding him.
Leorio - The definition of a badass, we know he has got a trick up his sleeve and he must be packing something special in that suitcase of his.
Alright those are the main characters of the show, even though I can't nearly capture how well done they are in this show this would be my general overview of them while trying to avoid spoilers. Hunter x Hunter being a ongoing 130 plus episode anime there are plenty of side characters, and each of these side characters are extremely interesting having mostly original backgrounds. Another thing I absolutely love about Hunter x Hunter are the antagonists from Hisoka to Chrollo and Meruem, all of the antagonist are extremely interesting, entertaining and ambiguous. These antagonists could probably have there own Anime series about them and it would be pretty successful. Honestly sometimes I catch myself cheering for them and this show does something very unique where the good guys could sometimes be viewed as the bad guys.
Enjoyment - 10
As a self proclaimed Hunter x Hunter fanboy, in very humble opinion I find this anime probably the most enjoyable and most intense thing I've ever seen. In Hunter x Hunter the battle scenes aren't who has the bigger rasengan or power level there are extremely strategic, and they aren't drawn on for multiple episodes by doing a typical shonen thing like making the combatant have multiple forms. These battle scenes may be short but they are so well done that sometimes I find my pants a little wet afterwards because I pissed myself in disbelief that an anime about a 12 year old kid could have such interesting fight scenes.
Overall - 10
My review doesn't even do this anime close to justice, it's just that good. I find myself having reached 122 days of anime watched on myanimelist and this could be possibly the best show I've seen yet. But I really hate how much of a bother it is to get people to watch this show, can't you guys just give it a try? If by episode 50 you don't love it then I'd love to hear why in a PM, hell we could have the discussion on my profile page for all my friends to see. Lets try not to judge a book by its cover, enough people already do that for Anime as a whole and it's really one of my top peeves, people should try to be more open minded. If you watch this series just please don't drop it by episode 2-5 watch a little more, I promise you this is a masterpiece you really just don't want to miss out on. Actually I can't promise you that this is a masterpiece because that's my own opinion but it is my own experienced opinion that leads me to the conclusion that Hunter x Hunter (2011) is possibly one of the best anime series ever and possibly the best shonen series ever.

Farewell my fellow Hunters, for I bid you adieu.
Story, we could argue it out, but the facts are you haven't seen Black Lagoon and I haven't seen HxH.
but, Black Lagoon has way better animation, art and VA.

Could argue about art style, but I'm not a fan of those other type of art style.
Edit: Even though MAL does not show all of the opinions of fans, it does show a large number of them. Black Lagoon is actually more popular due to the amount of people who has seen or is currently seeing it compared to Hunter x Hunter. My point was with the images was that the majority of people who is watching HxH really enjoys the anime and rates it highly compared to percentage of people who rate rates Black Lagoon highly. Most anime has a majority vote of 7/10 or 8/10, only a few has a majority of viewers rating it 9/10 or 10/10.

Hold on one second. You are forgetting another shouen show that is of the same quality as Gintama and Hunter x Hunter. JoJo's bizzare adventure
I'm not about to watch episodes 1-125 to figure out what is so good about this show.
There was a bunch of good moments in episodes 3-125 (The first two sucked, story didn't really start till episode 3) but episode 126 and 131 were godly episodes.
Although I understand what you mean, I aswell would mos likely not spend time to watch over 100 episodes of one episode opposed to watching a bunch of other 12/25 episode series.
Say "I Love You" :0 Thanks to Killua's recommendation, I watched it. It's my by far favorite top 1 romance anime. When I first saw it, judging by photos and stuff, I wasn't planning to watch it.
