This is a gun that fires a long, straight beam. The bullet doesn't travel like a convention weapon bullet, though. It's a straight beam

This is how bullets regularly fire:

The bullets are fired how a regular, modern firearm is shot.

This is how the Beam weapon fires (red line is the beam):

(Obviously the beam could be longer.)
The beam is "connected" to the weapon barrel. It is not fired like a regular bullet firearm.

The Beam Gun (you can suggest a better name) fires a single beam that has a high rate of fire (at the cost of a LOT of ammo consumed per second). This weapon deals a small amount of damage, but with the high RoF, it can deal massive damage. Ammo is depleted rather quickly, though. The beam's range is limited.

Any thoughts? Any ways to improve the idea?

It could just be like a Melee weapon. Kind of like the Chainsaw from Era? Basically, a gun, that has the same functionalities as a "automatic" melee weapon.

There already is a chainsaw in Zone and honestly, some guns needs major spread with multiple bullets at low damage. Having a gun that fires perfectly like that is... eh...

But it can easily be implemented from Zone!

Seriously, with the attack speed of weapons now, it'd fit right in perfectly with a continuous attack rate while allowing a small but steady movement.  

This went from some beam gun suggestion to a chainsaw suggestion.
