PRISM was the best selling album in 2013 from a female. Second to the best in general. It looks like PRISM might be the best selling album of 2014 as well. 21 was the best selling album of 2011 + 2012 as well. Post 2010 is when musical sales were declining at a much faster rate than 2000s. It's quite interesting that Adele managed to sell 30 million albums especially in a musical climate where sales are dropping. 21 and PRISM are comparable since they both belong to the post 2010s era. PRISM was her best lyrically and possibly her peak artistically. With 2 big songs and one moderate hit song, I'd expect it to sell 5-6 million like Taylor Swift's RED(2 moderate hits) or Pink's The Truth About Love(2 hits) in 2012(especially cause Katy gets more radio play than these two girls combined.)
Adele just appeals to a much more larger demographic than Katy Perry. Adele's hype in 2011 + 2012 was universal which resulted in adults, teens, and kids buying her album. Her album related to practically everyone. It amazes me that she managed to have such an amazing era especially at the time where EDM music was ruling the charts such as Party Rock Anthem and Titanium. She's truly once in a lifetime artist. Katy just caters to her younger audience more than her adult audience. |
