Interestingly, the holiday came from the british demanding reimbursement from mexico after fighting their own civil war (according to wikkipedia). And then the mexicans fought and lost to the french. Cinco de Mayo was about a victory that the mexicans had against the french (6000 french to 2000 mexicans). Though they won this battle, they needed the help of the americans to kick the french out of their country.
