Working on a song. Please help!! <3
Hi guys, I need some help! I'm working on this production and yes, it will have a "drop". I have the intro and build up laid out for the most part, I'm just super stuck on what the actual drop should sound like. Please check out the link below and give it a listen. Constructive criticism appreciated for the intro + build up, & let me know if anybody has some ideas for the drop! Thank you much!! https://soundcloud.com/voxileofficia...ogress/s-mxSZ7 (The soundcloud tag doesn't work with a private link) |

I know, right? Every time I listen to it I'm anticipating so much amazingness for the drop. That's why it needs to be just that, amazing! Yeah, I want some melodic dubstep or maybe some hybrid future trap that turns into melodic dubstep. It's really tough to get something that sounds good =( |

What do you recommend for this song then? Here are some styles I want to incorporate into this.. some how.. 1) https://soundcloud.com/grey/zedd-beautiful-now-remix 2) https://soundcloud.com/mrsuicidesheep/moonwalker-indigo 3) https://soundcloud.com/soundremedy/spiralslove 4) https://soundcloud.com/djvanic/vanic...er-be-together Well, actually these songs would kinda of sum up the overall feel I want to give my music, and my sound as an artist. |

I'm not a good person to ask, I only really listen to either dark or atmospheric dubstep...ish tunes nowadays. Your song sounds a bit more upbeat/electro, kind of like what Monstercat puts out on their Electro playlist. You should just yolo and do whatever you think sounds best. Easier for people to judge/give input.

Note: Excuse the english teacher attitude. Note2: I haven't tried to compose any of my own music so feel free is disregard my opinion (I won't be offended) Note3: I'm not even sure if you're still looking for advice, but what the heck yolo (am i rite?)! Alright, this is right up my alley! (I love this type of music) I feel as though you're half trying to get this sort of atmosphere: Spoiler
Spoiler
Listening to your previous work (which are great by the way), this is more airy than the others. In my opinion, your intro alone is fairly predictable in how the song will develop. It's not bad, but it's not epic. Firstly (or should I say secondly), how indigo 'layers' (not sure if this is a thing, but I believe it gives a good picture of what I mean), and how the 'vibe' varies. Indigo starts out simple. A melody, and light chord progression underneath in the background. This goes for two cycles (the 4 bars), then Moonwalker teases the listener by using a small build up but delivers with a harmony on top of the melody, and a heavier chord progression to add to the song without changing it. Side Note: The chords keep the beat, and keep the beat in a very 2/4 manner. (if anyone's curious this pretty much means it puts the emphasis on the 1st and 3rd beat in a bar, so it goes 1 2 1 2. This makes the song feel fast, 140 BPM. Another small build up and a beat is introduced to add depth, the harmony on top removed to keep '3' layers in height and not make the song too 'full'. Sort of like emptying the song a bit. The chord progression is removed to allow the drums/beat have the beat, making feel a lot slower (~70BPM) when in fact it is still 140 BPM. The occasional drum gives the song a 4/4 (1 2, 3, 4, and these two put together makes the song feel slower (half the speed at ~70 BPM) (It is still actually at 140 BPM though). These two parts develop the melody. They share the same idea, but give off two different vibes. It avoids repetitively enough but doesn't change the song drastically. Note that this is 30 seconds into the song. The proper build up starts one minute into the song. The build up is the most prominent thing in this bit, with the melody in the background. After the build up he puts everything together and makes the sound full. The synths are new but follow the chord progression at the start regarding notes. I'm running out of time so I'll TL;DR TL;DR: Moonwalk uses a variety of techniques to avoid repetition.
The Feeling has a great foundation. I think you just need to explore it a little more. Bring in elements of dubstep, rock, classical, etc. You don't have to make the perfect from the start, you can take parts out and add them in again. What to fix (in my opinion):
Where to go:
This type of electronic music has a technique, that like everything else is developed over time. Start with a draft, and polish it and polish it, and don't be afraid to knock everything down and rebuild the materials in a different pattern. |
