All your definitions of sexism say that it is defined as having an "attitude or behavior". You're dumb because all Simons did was make an educated guess it's not like he's was saying "wow a girl that codes so she must be x, y, and z."

Even if my assumption were sexist; what is the issue? I'd love to know who I am hurting or offending by assuming that someone is a guy (which I was right about...).

Now if I went around saying/stereotyping that Fysez is an awful programmer because of his(her) gender. Or if I said that I don't think women should be programmers because males are naturally better. Or maybe if I stated that I don't believe that Fysez is actually a girl, simply on the basis that (s)he is a programmer, then yes, that would be incredibly sexist.

But thats not what I did, the only information I had about Fysez was that he was interested in a career field that is overwhelmingly (males outnumber women like 9 - 1 or something around there), and decided that it is probably more likely that Fysez is a guy.

I have a feeling that this definition means more towards what I posted above; when your actions reflect stereotypes that you believe.

Women are bad programmers, is a stereotype.

Programming being a predominately male field is not a stereotype, its a fact.


If you want to get butthurt about that, its cool with me cause I really don't care. Just seems like a silly thing to be sensitive about to me when I wasn't doing anything wrong, and no one was actually offended.

Platinum isn't dumb :0 Society has just twisted the words sexism/racism to mean anything that has a connection to race or sex. I've literally heard people pull the racism card for saying things like "Oh, you mean the black guy?".

This is especially common with younger people who are wrapped up with the idea with political correctness and watching others feelings; and I am pretty sure Platinum is under 16 so this would be totally understandable.

Given the fact you only knew he was a programmer, isn't that exactly what you did?

Stereotyping is a large subject on its own, but in this context it wasn't being used against women. Your second definition refers to traditional stereotypes of gender roles, which, again, is not what we're dealing with here.

You're offending all female programmers because you automatically assumed that he was actually a male. It doesn't matter that males make up the majority, or that it's a stereotype, you can't ignore the fact that you are overlooking the minority of programmers, those who are female. What is the issue with this? This discourages females from pursuing a future in IT, because it continues to confirm gender roles that programmers should be males.

Fysez claimed to be female before this thread was made, but you assumed that he was a male before this (unless you meant that you believe him to be telling the truth that he is a male and never knew he was a female before this thread).

Yes I agree with you that programming is mostly made up of males, but if someone says they are a female in programming you shouldn't think they're lying just because of that statistic.

Don't say butthurt, its a derogatory term referring to raping. This could trigger someone, and yes words can leave nasty scars or make someone extremely uncomfortable. You don't care because it's not affecting YOU, females are the ones being looked over as unfit for a career in programming. This affects real people. How do you know no one was actually offended?

FFS should I have assumed that Fysez was genderless? Or would it make sense that I assume that Fysez was a girl. The answer to both of those is no. I don't get it, what do you actually think I should've done? "OH ****! FYSEZ IS IN A MALE DOMINATED CAREER FIELD AND I DONT THEIR GENDER, BETTER ASSUME HE IS A WOMAN OR WAS BORN WITHOUT A GENDER SO I DONT OFFEND ANY SENSITIVE LITTLE KIDDIES!"

Never had any idea Fysez was saying he was a girl, just figured he was a male. I suck with genders ok? I thought Talon was a girl for the longest time and still have no clue if ViciPower is a boy or girl-- cause I don't give a ****, some internet stranger's gender is of no concern to me.

Females don't have careers in programming because they aren't pursuing careers in programming, if a girl wants to get into programming all she has to do is change her major from "Feminist Dance Therapy" to "Programming". No one is actively trying to stop women from getting in fields like that, I'm sure that most guys don't want to work in a giant sausage box and would happily welcome women.

Not only that but programming is a job that is largely self employed; or something where you will communicate with your client over the web-- where gender is for the most part irrelevant.

When it comes to the kind of ridiculous bull**** that some people think is racism, I'm not happy about it. I'm all for equality and coexisting but some SJ **** is just ridiculous.  

kinda strange to think how if the word 'good' was thrown into the sentence it would have shifted from stereotypical to sexist

Stereotypes are formed by society and culture. I'd be more worried about people who use stereotypes for the sake of belittling women than the people who make assumptions based on social stereotypes.
