You know the bombs you can get in Destiny after upgrading your lantern? What are they even supposed to be, and do they serve any special purpose? They do have the slightly higher area of affect but that's it.

Nah, they're just cosmetic. A choice like this comes down classic trying to keep everyone on a level playing field not only so newcomers to the game don't get entirely dominated but you don't end up with a pay to win scenario that upsets a bunch of people.
