they speak the same language, probably live close to each other and would like to hang, also its a lot easier to communicate with somebody else using the same language  

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be around people of your same culture.
And if you changed your nationality to Filipino, got in their group and demonstrated you have no knowledge of the Filipino language or culture, that's easy to pick out.
