the military involved with the coup want to make sure the government is secular.

i dont think much will come out of this other than needless civilian deaths. the military itself is split so not all of them are involved.

How it happened was shocking. There was no unity in the military or support from the leaders, so the fact that many military personnel were able to secretly organize that without tipping off supporters of Turkey's President is shocking.

yeah i was also impressed with their multi-city coordination but without the full suport of the military they were destined to struggle. turkey's president is a piece of **** so it's a shame that they failed, but i have to reserve judgement until i know where these civilian deaths stem from.

the military behind the coup urged folks to stay at home, while the government encouraged folks to take to the streets. no doubt this contributed to the death count, but it doesnt help the military behind the coup at all if they are the ones that killed civilians.

Based on what I heard about the military and previous coups, I'm surprised the full military wasn't involved. He's an elected and (generally) liked President, but he's trying to change the constitution which the military is supposed to defend. I also thought it was naive of the President of Turkey to tell his citizens to go into harm's way by going out onto the streets. That might be the only reason the coup failed, though. Yea, I figured casualties were impossible to avoid but that was a lot of pointless deaths that shouldn't have happened.  

i think its a bad time for a coup to be honest. PKK is against the coupe and ISIS would get some disgusting cheap shots in while the country is temporarily destabilized.  

Had to call all my relatives since most of them live in ankara and istanbul, my favorite aunt couldnt sleep at all because they bombed a police academy close to her house so I was pretty damn worried and still am.

All on erdogans side here, I think he did a good job on telling the citizens to go out and protest, he didnt force anyone. They did it because they wanted to imo so no one is at fault here.

the guy is trying to **** on the secular reform ataturk brought which helped turkey evolve into the modern power it is today. hes an islamist who wouldnt mind if turkey's secularism was thrown out the window. if he tried he would of course be tossed by the full military as it is their task to make sure turkey remains secular.

that and hes a corrupt ****.

with that said, i dont really support the military personnel who commited treason. this wasnt a normal coup attempt.

There is a lot of allegations that his government supports ISIL. Even when they joined the coalition against the Islamic state, they did more air strikes against both the PKK and the YPG than ISIL, making little to no difference that one is a terrorist organization while the other is our allies. Most extremists in the region get their weapons from Turkey with little resistance.

However what is most peculiar is the illegal entry of oil from ISIS into Turkey. While airstrikes against the terrorists where done occasionally, they never targeted ISIS oil tankers until Russian involvement in the matter. The week Russian jets destroy hundreds of oil convoys heading to Turkey, the Turkish Armed Forces take down a Russian jet not longer in Turkish Air Space.

The US is never really getting any of the garbage compared to Europe, even when they (the US) cause it.  

He's going to use this to get even more power and weed out anyone who may potentially be against him, even if there's no basis for that thought process. He's going to make sure there's no opposition at all to him.  

Yeah purges and "cleansing" are common after failed coups.

This can not end well for the military.
