I think they're kinda late on the card game train and they'll have to pull off something pretty interesting to set it apart from Hearthstone and GWENT. Biggest issue with TCGs is that the game state gets stale really quickly. The most unfortunate thing about these games is that deckbuilding isn't an important part of being good.

I'm actually excited for the game. Card games have a negative connotation by their nature because many of them have been poorly executed projects. To further this, many people have a negative opinion of DotA because they don't understand the game or have personal biases. For these reasons, the opinion so far on the game has been overwhelmingly negative and this negativity has caused many to jump on the 'VALVE SUX!' bandwagon. The DotA lore is quite interesting, and the world is massive, allowing for a potentially very strong narrative. Also, the gameplay mechanics of DotA have all been confirmed to be in this card game. DotAs features are all very robust and strong, and a card game that even comes close to DotAs mechanics will be like no card game currently released. In terms of the people complaining about Valve making it P2W, none of Valves games have ever been P2W so they won't start with Artifact. Valve likes creating cosmetics and hats that make money to avoid having the bad money making practices in many games, but they never make the games themselves P2W. DotA itself is one of the most F2P games ever made because there is not a single aspect of the game that is dictated by anything you could pay for. The argument that this game is taking the place of the pyro update or HL3 is just daft because of the way that Valve functions as a company. If you work at Valve, you are able to freely choose what you want to work on. Because of this, the people working on this game were not told by 'Valve' to work on the game instead of HL3 or the pyro update, they made that decision themselves. Artifact was announced at a DotA event because it is based in the DotA universe, the other games that Valve is working on will be announced soon as discussed at last years Steam Dev Days. |
