Fans of the original Star Wars trilogy have spent 34 years dreaming and wondering about what happened to their childhood idol after the events of Return of the Jedi. They read comics, stories etc throughout that time to give them their own interpretation of what happened. In these stories, Luke was very powerful and rightfully so. Now, even though those old stories are no longer canon, lots of people still believed and hoped that Luke would be a strong figure whom would show off the jedi abilities that he had learnt in all that time.

When Luke became a hologram the nostalgoa was unbelievable, a lot of people really thought he was going to take them on, even though Disney had made him a hermit figure (which a lot of people were dreading). Then when he disappeared at the end into a force ghost this was the last straw for many fans. It means that they would never get to see what they have wanted to see for decades. How strong Luke had fully become.

In the entire film there was no Lightsaber to Lightsaber combat at all. Which is extremely disappointing for fans of the franchise who enjoy watching lightsaber combat which has been in every star wars film, except this.

Many are saying it's a great Movie, I agree. A great Star Wars film? No. The characters could have been handled better, especially Luke who Ryan Johnson decided to pop-off because he believed he was interfeiring with the new main characters.

Idk about you but being able to hologram yourself across the galaxy is pretty badass in itself and Im pretty sure unprecedented as far as force ability goes. Also want to add that Luke didn't die, he just became a force ghost, so it is totally possible that he will continue to be a part of star wars especially seeing the terrible backlash from VIII

It's just annoying because the narrative throughout the film was so ****, and just didn't feel like starwars, but because it's a movie it's now canon, and what everything that comes after will have to relate back to.

The prequel trilogy starwars movies had bad dialogue yes, but the story itself that the film was trying to convey was actually good. The look of the film, atmosphere and action were starwars. This film, just doesn't seem like it at all. Replace the lightsabers with normal swords and it could pass as a disney influenced star-trek EPISODE, not even a film.

As many people have said, the story of TLJ is as if the director looked at all the fan theories of what they thought was set up in TFA, and decided to completely go against it just to suprise fans. I'm happy the direction the film went was original, and not just a rehash as TFA was, but it's ultimately such a missed opportunity because of the way they went about it, despite having potential in some aspects it began to explore.

It's like they wanted to take risks, but at the same time they wanted to play it safe. So they would do something unexpected, that you're exited for, but then completely wrap it up and definitively end that narrative.

RIP, not exactly exited for the next one with the set up. Feel bad for JJ directing it, because all the set up he did in the first film was completely disregarded so now he'll have to pick up the limited pieces left by Ryan Johnson.

If this film wasn't a STARWAR's film, I wouldn't have minded. It wasn't a good film but it was enjoyable to watch. The Starwars attachment to the film is what's causing the issues as this is what will be looked back on, and have to be carried forward unless JJ pulls a Ryan Johnson and disregards his script like Ryan did to his film.

because it just makes no ****ing sense what so ever. In all the previous 7 starwars films, all the canon tv episodes, everything, what Luke did has never been done before, or even thought to be possible. Why would they introduce that in this film, just for the spectacle of him to have the illusion of being there for 5 minutes, to then just die.
If he was ready to die, why didn't he just go there in person, actually fight and then die. Let him go off in glory by taking down the whole army, fighting Kylo, then letting him kill him just so that he becomes a martyr for the rest of the 'resistance' who didn't even bother coming. Instead, nobody even knows he's actually dead in the film besides Leia/ Rey. If you're going to kill him, then kill him. Don't go "oh he's dead, wait nevermind he's not dead he tricked everyone, wait no he's actually dead." so stupid. Did the same **** with Leia but it would have made sense for that to be her death.
Look i'll give one example that would of improved the film. They wanted to show Leia has force powers, so when the missiles get shot at the bridge, Leia senses the missiles, uses her force powers to push everyone out of the bridge and close the door, dies a hero and shows the audience she had the force. Would have even meant Admiral Akbar would have survived, who could have then became the 2nd in command and been the one to crash the ship which would have been a good ending for his character. As opposed to become ****ing super man, die and comeback to life, fly back to the ship and be rescued and have NOBODY WHO SAW IT even question how TF she just did that, and act as if she uses the force all the time around them. Just another example of good setup, **** choice of execution and following through.

The only explanation that makes even remote sense for why they decided to do that whole illusion bull**** was because they want to show it's something that's possible in the starwars universe, so in the next film when someone like Snoke is still alive as his death was just an illusion like Lukes was, then there's an explanation for it as it had happened in TLJ.

I mean think of how stupid Lukes illusion death was. Before he dies, he gives Leia Han Solo's dice as a momento. But it's actually a hologram so as soon as he died it just dissapears because it wasn't even real. "Here Leia, keep this to remember Han, oh wait nevermind i'm dead now, you just got bamboozled"

We all know Luke didnt fully die, but we don’t care. There was no need to make him a force ghost this early on.

Also they didn't make the decision because Mark Hamill might die. He is not even that old, and does not have any health problems, like Carrie Fisher did before her tragic death.

The beginning lone pilot taking on an entire ship. Looked cool, but suspended way beyond disbelief even for starwars.

That's a bit picky, I think everything looked rather stunning in this movie.

The ending of force awakens which was seen as a powerful moment and speculated on for 2 years was turned into a literal throw away joke for a quick laugh.

I agree somewhat. This was supposedly a more serious movie but there was too much humor, even though I laughed. Some punch liners were cringy.

The entire sub-plot of the casino planet did not even look or feel like a starwars film. The plot itself was unnecessary and meaningless.

Everyone and every reviewer I know has said the same thing, and I agree. The casino scene did not need to be in this movie.

The Rose character was uninteresting, ironically there is probably more character development from her than almost all the other main characters.

Rose did not need to be in this movie. Too cliche, horrible script and dialog, then I cringed SO hard when she yelled, "Need a lift?" on a busted ATAT thingy while the ship was going down. Just terrible. Her character sucked.

The memed admiral akbar who they could have used for the spaceship collision scene which would have been an awesome tribute to him is instead killed off screen and mentioned in 1 line, when the purple haired girl could have taken that place and it probably would have added to the story.

I agree. I don't like how they introduced this purple-haired girl, but seeing as how much of a darker tone this movie is supposed to take, I found the tragic death of Admiral Akbar appropriate for this movie. We all glorified him too much because of his famous one liner in the OT. He was a simple side character, and we knew he was a good leader. He never had any major dialog, but when he died on the bridge it was still tragic. You had your hopes a little too high.

No, he's being smart. I don't think he's out of character, but if you don't look into Luke's character really technically you're going to be disappointed. His view of the force in this movie is so vast; he's had time to think about a lot of things and dig deep into the force. He's playing this war a lot more conservatively then in the OT because he thought he failed with his jedi academy after Kylo went rogue. He's not as persistent with Kylo as he was with his father Vader because unlike Vader, Luke saw first hand all the darkness that was welling up inside Kylo. Luke saw this as a threat and instinctively ignited his lightsaber, thinking of killing him. But, as you can see, he hesitated, knowing that it was the wrong decision. Kylo ignited his lightsaber, and Luke went to strike because he could see Kylo's feelings, then their sabers collided. He almost DIED trying to turn his father, it was damn difficult. If Vader hadn't turned, Luke would have been dead. He knew that if he were to allow Kylo's dark feelings to rise any more, there could be another crazy thing like Darth Vader.

Leia is superwomen
(should have let her die in that scene, would have made the film better and actually been an impacting death considering her circumstances, yet now she will just likely be killed off screen for the next film)

I thought Leia using the force in this manner was very interesting. We always knew she had some connection to the force, but it was never shown in the OT other than communicating with Luke. Seeing as she used the force to pull herself back to the ship was but a representation of her current force powers. Is it the fact that she pulled herself back to this ship with the force or how she looked when doing it? Not too sure what people are mad about with this one.

Rey becomes a ninja warrior despite never being trained on doing any combat

I know. I hate this. She's somehow able to stand with Luke on Octo, too, after blindsiding him with her damn staff. Unless he wasn't trying, then I see why he'd allow her to get the best of him. I know Luke's force abilities are beyond Rey's, though, so how could he allow her to ignite a lightsaber in front of him after she summoned it with the force? He didn't even try to take it from her. She did point out beforehand that he "cut himself off from the force" but that wouldn't make sense here. My guess is he probably didn't want to fight her anyway and is doing what a jedi should; using the force only for knowledge and defense, never to attack. Yoda taught him this. If Rey really did intend to kill him, I can guarantee you he would have done something. In this case, he knew she was just trying to intimidate him and knock some sense into him.

As for Rey VS. Snokes guards, I expected her to be carried by Kylo a little more. There's no way her form is refined like it was after just a little practice swinging it like a damn child on Octo. Her overall force abilities are quite strong; must have a high medichlorean count. Badum, tshh. Being as how conflicted Kylo is, his force abilities lack in some areas.

Snoke gets bamboozled and is killed despite never being told anything about him and despite being the most powerful person in the entire starwars universe. (hope to god that he's not actually dead and just a reflection or whatever that luke did).

I believe Snoke wanted Kylo to kill him. When Snoke said "true enemy" it wouldn't make sense if he were talking about Rey. I knew from the start that Kylo didn't like following Snoke, and if Snoke really was a strong as he said he was, he would have been able to stop Kylo from killing him. I mean, did you see how damn fast he force lightninged Kylo when he stood up? He could also force choke and grab people from different ships like Vader. I think our questions will be answered next episode. Perhaps as a force ghost since Snoke isn't necessarily sith. Perhaps still alive, we'll see. It wouldn't make sense to kill him without knowing much, and I think the directors know that.

Kylo is a **** villain, they should have ran with what they started. (if snoke didn't actually die then they might).

Not ****, just young and conflicted as all hell. He's capable of a lot, after this episode he's on the dark side and there's no bringing him back. I'm sure his force abilities will be more refined since he won't be as conflicted between light and dark.

90% of the deaths in the entire film would have been avoidable if that stupid purple haired leia wannabe just told them what her plan was. Lukes death is literally her fault.

Well, Poe was demoted. Technically he didn't have access to such information since Leia, herself, most likely told purple hair that Poe needs to be controlled. Poe's disobedience resulted in the entire bombing fleet to be taken down. I wouldn't trust him either if I were Leia. Leia probably thought that Poe might not like the plan, and may have told purple hair to keep quiet.

Luke passed as a force ghost, because he KNEW he'd be of more use as a force ghost. Did you see how Yoda was able to control lightning at will by destroying the sacred tree that held sacred texts? Luke died peacefully. And I believe, as a force ghost,
Luke will be able to teach Rey a lot more **** and still may be able to do things physically. To me, it doesn't look like he died. Yoda died and passed as a force ghost while he was laying down looking like he died. Obi Wan was struck down and passed as a force ghost. Luke was sitting cross-legged on a rock and passed. Perhaps he can transition in and out of this. Who knows what else he's capable of.

Why was the film a 1 and a half hour slow space chase? The first order has supposedly almost gained control over the entire galaxy, and yet they never thought to call on another ship to space jump infront of them. Or just use their own fighters that they used to temporarily kill Leia, to keep doing what they did.

My explanation is they didn't want to expend unnecessary resources. They had them in a chase and they knew the resistance were running out of fuel. They thought they were going to catch them regardless. The person in command, General Hux (Is that how ye spell it?) Is a cocky, snooty leader. He doesn't always use his head, probably because of Snoke force choking and pulling him to the floor all the time, banging his face on the ground xD. Jokes aside, the General wasn't thinking of this and wasnt in a hurry obviously.

What was the point of Luke making a clone of himself across the entire galaxy just to dodge to 2 hits. Surely he could have gone there in person, and that would have actually meant more. Thought he was going to appear in his X-wing that they showed a shot of at the bottom of the ocean.

Perhaps his x-wing no longer worked. Probably can't go through lightspeed, either. It was easier for him to cast an image of himself than to travel there in a 45+ year-old x-wing that had been sunk in water for many years. This is the second time in the water, now. Most likely doesn't work. You can notice that Luke looked younger; the same as how he looked when he was about to kill him. This image would strike a different feeling in Kylo and would bring out his true rage and feelings. You also need to remember that Luke was still thinking about all this after Rey left the island on the Falcon. He'd have no way of getting to the salt planet in time, so he casted himself in order to buy the resistance enough time to escape.

I don't really care as much about Luke as most starwars fans do but christ that was the worst possible pay off to his last film. I was expecting to see him do some crazy stuff like take down all the walkers using his powers I keep hearing the people who read the expanded universe stuff talk about- which would have also thrown back to his line earlier in the film where he joked about Rey thinking he would take on the first order by himself. Then when that didn't happen I was expecting them to do the Obi-Wan kenobi death, which they basically did, but instead of him dying there, he dies of heatstroke not even on that planet. Why isn't he even using his green lightsaber either.

RIP starwars, this replaceable **** just made to make a never ending series is all we're going to get considering this directors already been signed on for the next trilogy. I mean take out the lightsabers and storm troopers and it's just a generic disney scifi film. All the starwars essence is gone.


There were some cool scenes like the beginning space battle, the kylo/rey/ red guard fight scene, The shot of the spaceship getting ripped in half, yea that's it. Rogue One was way better, would have preferred the director from that took over.

He's not as persistent with Kylo as he was with his father Vader because unlike Vader, Luke saw first hand all the darkness that was welling up inside Kylo. Luke saw this as a threat and instinctively ignited his lightsaber, thinking of killing him. But, as you can see, he hesitated, knowing that it was the wrong decision. Kylo ignited his lightsaber, and Luke went to strike because he could see Kylo's feelings, then their sabers collided. He almost DIED trying to turn his father, it was damn difficult. If Vader hadn't turned, Luke would have been dead. He knew that if he were to allow Kylo's dark feelings to rise any more, there could be another crazy thing like Darth Vader.

I thought Leia using the force in this manner was very interesting. We always knew she had some connection to the force, but it was never shown in the OT other than communicating with Luke. Seeing as she used the force to pull herself back to the ship was but a representation of her current force powers. Is it the fact that she pulled herself back to this ship with the force or how she looked when doing it? Not too sure what people are mad about with this one.

I know. I hate this. She's somehow able to stand with Luke on Octo, too, after blindsiding him with her damn staff. Unless he wasn't trying, then I see why he'd allow her to get the best of him. I know Luke's force abilities are beyond Rey's, though, so how could he allow her to ignite a lightsaber in front of him after she summoned it with the force? He didn't even try to take it from her. She did point out beforehand that he "cut himself off from the force" but that wouldn't make sense here. My guess is he probably didn't want to fight her anyway and is doing what a jedi should; using the force only for knowledge and defense, never to attack. Yoda taught him this. If Rey really did intend to kill him, I can guarantee you he would have done something. In this case, he knew she was just trying to intimidate him and knock some sense into him.

As for Rey VS. Snokes guards, I expected her to be carried by Kylo a little more. There's no way her form is refined like it was after just a little practice swinging it like a damn child on Octo. Her overall force abilities are quite strong; must have a high medichlorean count. Badum, tshh. Being as how conflicted Kylo is, his force abilities lack in some areas.

Snoke gets bamboozled and is killed despite never being told anything about him and despite being the most powerful person in the entire starwars universe. (hope to god that he's not actually dead and just a reflection or whatever that luke did).

I believe Snoke wanted Kylo to kill him. When Snoke said "true enemy" it wouldn't make sense if he were talking about Rey. I knew from the start that Kylo didn't like following Snoke, and if Snoke really was a strong as he said he was, he would have been able to stop Kylo from killing him. I mean, did you see how damn fast he force lightninged Kylo when he stood up? He could also force choke and grab people from different ships like Vader. I think our questions will be answered next episode. Perhaps as a force ghost since Snoke isn't necessarily sith. Perhaps still alive, we'll see. It wouldn't make sense to kill him without knowing much, and I think the directors know that.

Kylo is a **** villain, they should have ran with what they started. (if snoke didn't actually die then they might).

Not ****, just young and conflicted as all hell. He's capable of a lot, after this episode he's on the dark side and there's no bringing him back. I'm sure his force abilities will be more refined since he won't be as conflicted between light and dark.

90% of the deaths in the entire film would have been avoidable if that stupid purple haired leia wannabe just told them what her plan was. Lukes death is literally her fault.

Well, Poe was demoted. Technically he didn't have access to such information since Leia, herself, most likely told purple hair that Poe needs to be controlled. Poe's disobedience resulted in the entire bombing fleet to be taken down. I wouldn't trust him either if I were Leia. Leia probably thought that Poe might not like the plan, and may have told purple hair to keep quiet.

Luke passed as a force ghost, because he KNEW he'd be of more use as a force ghost. Did you see how Yoda was able to control lightning at will by destroying the sacred tree that held sacred texts? Luke died peacefully. And I believe, as a force ghost,
Luke will be able to teach Rey a lot more **** and still may be able to do things physically. To me, it doesn't look like he died. Yoda died and passed as a force ghost while he was laying down looking like he died. Obi Wan was struck down and passed as a force ghost. Luke was sitting cross-legged on a rock and passed. Perhaps he can transition in and out of this. Who knows what else he's capable of.

Why was the film a 1 and a half hour slow space chase? The first order has supposedly almost gained control over the entire galaxy, and yet they never thought to call on another ship to space jump infront of them. Or just use their own fighters that they used to temporarily kill Leia, to keep doing what they did.

My explanation is they didn't want to expend unnecessary resources. They had them in a chase and they knew the resistance were running out of fuel. They thought they were going to catch them regardless. The person in command, General Hux (Is that how ye spell it?) Is a cocky, snooty leader. He doesn't always use his head, probably because of Snoke force choking and pulling him to the floor all the time, banging his face on the ground xD. Jokes aside, the General wasn't thinking of this and wasnt in a hurry obviously.

What was the point of Luke making a clone of himself across the entire galaxy just to dodge to 2 hits. Surely he could have gone there in person, and that would have actually meant more. Thought he was going to appear in his X-wing that they showed a shot of at the bottom of the ocean.

Perhaps his x-wing no longer worked. Probably can't go through lightspeed, either. It was easier for him to cast an image of himself than to travel there in a 45+ year-old x-wing that had been sunk in water for many years. This is the second time in the water, now. Most likely doesn't work. You can notice that Luke looked younger; the same as how he looked when he was about to kill him. This image would strike a different feeling in Kylo and would bring out his true rage and feelings. You also need to remember that Luke was still thinking about all this after Rey left the island on the Falcon. He'd have no way of getting to the salt planet in time, so he casted himself in order to buy the resistance enough time to escape.

I don't really care as much about Luke as most starwars fans do but christ that was the worst possible pay off to his last film. I was expecting to see him do some crazy stuff like take down all the walkers using his powers I keep hearing the people who read the expanded universe stuff talk about- which would have also thrown back to his line earlier in the film where he joked about Rey thinking he would take on the first order by himself. Then when that didn't happen I was expecting them to do the Obi-Wan kenobi death, which they basically did, but instead of him dying there, he dies of heatstroke not even on that planet. Why isn't he even using his green lightsaber either.

You were 'expecting'. First mistake.

Way more stuff but i'm done ranting now. RIP starwars, this replaceable **** just made to make a never ending series is all we're going to get considering this directors already been signed on for the next trilogy. I mean take out the lightsabers and storm troopers and it's just a generic disney scifi film. All the starwars essence is gone.


There were some cool scenes like the beginning space battle, the kylo/rey/ red guard fight scene, The shot of the spaceship getting ripped in half, yea that's it. Rogue One was way better, would have preferred the director from that took over.

Movie was kinda meh. Not horrible, but not amazing either.

I felt it tried to hard to keep fans interested by relying on references to the plots of the original trilogy and by the time the movie ended I remembered that this was just part of a new set of movies. I just hope the next ones try to be their own thing and not just retell the story of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader just with different people.

She was taught by Luke for a third of the movie. That's how she learned to utilize her powers for good. She is the last Jedi because Yoda burned the sacred Jedi texts.

We don't need to use spoilers, I think people get what this thread is about at this point
