IPv4(the current ip format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) was put into place a long time ago, before they could have ever predicted how large the internet would become. However there was eventually a large flaw: IPv4 couldn't allocate enough IPs for every connection. They were literally running out of IP addresses. They bandaid-fixed it with something called NAT; most people use a router, something that allows multiple connections to share a single connection--and they all have something called NAT. What NAT does is practically lets the router create its own little IP database. Giving and assigning its own IPs to whatever connects to it. So your PC may have the IP of 10.0.10.2 and your PS3 will have the IP of 10.0.10.3. However this is all localized, and in reality once you go past your router you're all still on the same IP provided by your ISP. Your router is just alleviating it by creating a little localized web of connections, but it never extends past the single IP you are all really on. IPv6 will soon enough fix all of this. It will be able to accommodate so many IPs that everything will have its own unique IP and NAT will be a thing of the past. It will be able to accommodate an IP for every device in all the households of the world, even devices such as refrigerators and TVs. |

Yes i indeed think it is hard to grasp for the feeble minded. I'm no genius but I'm sure if everyone researched things like this they'd know what to do instead of posting about a 3 hr jail. JS

@Dusty. Wow. A well-thought out concise explanation. Am I in the right place?
