The same reason shows like Annoying Orange and all the Disney BS exists. Different generations have different tastes :/ I know my nephew likes watching pewdiepie... I can't stand him.  

Most people have a low "humor iQ" and laugh at stupid **** thats not even funny

I gotta hand it to these Youtube users though, they know they're not funny or entertaining. They just release the same **** their fans appreciate and rake in the money. They probably look at their videos and say "Gee, i'm a ****ing tool."  

It's actually ridiculous how much money these cancerous YouTubers like Pewdiepie and Tobuscus are making just by playing a game and screaming immature obscenities, and it's even more ridiculous that people enjoy it this much.

Yeah, this is my main gripe. PewDiePie is estimated to have made 1.6 million dollars last year alone, and it could probably be more. He could easily retire for the rest of his life off of his videos soon. Everyone seems to be saying that it is free advertisement and that there isn't a reason for them to not be taken down, but no one has seemed to answer why they should even be paid in the first place-- the very purpose of this thread. Sure, the audience is watching for their personality, but the reason they like their content in the first place is because these youtubers are using other peoples content that the audience is interested in as "comedy" material per se. Like I just said earlier, if it was done as Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was done, I wouldn't have a problem. But these youtubers are basically just providing basic reactions to the game, not even a simple commentary.

I'm not watching a video to experience the game--I'm watching it to experience whatever qualities the commentator brings to their playthrough.

Most Lets Players are not providing a commentary. The vast majority of Lets players are only providing an emotional reaction to the game which requires no structure or intellectual purpose. There is a very big difference. Its basically like saying the audience of a football game are just as much of a commentator as the announcer on TV. Remember, the announcer provides an analysis of each player, which team he thinks will win, and what will happen in the future. The audience's actions are a direct result of the game, and nothing else. Look at Pewdiepie and Tobuscus' videos and tell me with a straight face that is a commentary, or that they deserve to make millions of dollars off those videos.

If you want to see a gaming video done right with actual creative content and commentary, watch this video. This is the type of stuff that I'm okay with.

 

I actually go to let's plays to figure out if I want to buy a game or not lol.  

You guys should watch angry joe. Does great reviews and is actually quite funny

To answer OP's question: I feel like it's important that Let's Plays exist and it's safe to say that if there was no revenue there would be a greatly reduced number of them. You can say it's not fair for pieces of **** like PewDiePie to make money, but there are people who make money through ****ty facebook pages or other free social media outlets. I'm not sure removing Let's Plays will accomplish much besides pissing off a few immature nerds with half-decent computers and a microphone, and lowering exposure to Nintendo games.

I'm sure most the revenue comes from the advertisements you see on youtube. So if they see someone generating 1 million plus views every video, they'll set up a partnership with the person because of the advertising opportunities it presents even if it means partnering with a youtuber that screams every video. As long as it generates views.

As for whether youtubers like pewdiepie deserve to get paid for the kind of content they put out, that's a different story but the fact that he gets paid millions for doing what he does, kudos to him because honestly, and like you said, i have seen videos that are ten times better but are not even getting close to those views he gets. But at the end of the day, youtube money is about the views more than the content. Personally, and i think a lot of people can agree, i usually watch gaming videos if im stuck on a level or if im unsure if i want to buy the game or not.

Now, why i think it is a bad move by nintendo to take all the revenue from the lets plays is because youtubers might stop making videos with nintendo games which will decrease exposure of the companies games. Plus although you can say that people watch for the personality not the game, the fact still remains that the game is still being exposed. And if a kid is watching a youtube commentator have fun then they might go out and buy the game to experience it themselves. But like you said, it is a pride thing and if someone if making money off of my content or game, i would want a share of that money too. So i do understand where nintendo is coming from. Plus i think they do need that extra revenue because they are falling far behind xbox and sony.

If i was nintendo, i would reach out to a youtube commentator so they could help expose some games or even use youtube as a way to get feedback from the community. I know 2k sports did that and so did planetside.

There will be no distinction between the two with Nintendo's route though. What you consider quality content is exactly the same as Pewdiepie as far as Nintendo is concerned, and that's the problem.

edit: Also, just bought another game last night(Rogue Legacy) after watching one of my subscribers play it.

LOL MY SIDES! I agree so much with you! Pewdiepie is annoying as hell and I openly tell people that as well. Him and Tobuscus never make me laugh because all they do is scream in all their lets plays.
