Let's be real here. Don't say "gay means happy" because the word does not mean the same as it did in the 19th century. In today's vocabulary we've got a double meaning for the word gay: one for homosexuals and one is akin to something that is dumb. If you replace "gay" with a different minority when attempting to insult something it just doesn't come out the same way. When it is used it is not used in a derogatory way towards homosexuals--unlike another three letter word beginning with F--it is a word that this our generation has adopted a double meaning for, like it or not. When people discuss this topic it's always like, "I hate when people use the word that way, it's so upsetting to gays!" yet I don't know a single gay person that gives a ****. It's the straight people that are all "supportive of gays" who care. By censoring the word however you are (in my opinion) pushing the negative connotation of the derivative onto the sexuality (gay is bad, essentially) and that kind of namby-pamby solution is what keeps the problem you're trying to address alive. People aren't going to abide by your filter, they're going to evade it, so all you're really doing is carrying the connotation. There is a purpose for a cuss filter on this game, but the word "gay" shouldn't be in it. That is why it isn't in the large list of words that are in this forum's filter. |

Rufus i'd go as far as to say that *** also went down the same path. When I call someone a ******, it's because they are acting like ****s (yet another word that doesn't mean what it's supposed to), not because they are showing homosexual qualities (although if you wear pink jeans I will jokingly call you a ***).

Just another reason I support clientside optional filtering. Giving the player the choice to opt out of censoring means people won't have a reason to avoid it. This means better censoring for the players who DO want words censoring, because it will always be very easy to evade a censor.

I'd be down with Clientsided Censorship. I'll suggest this idea.

I think the idea of Clientsided Censorship sounds better then it really is. For starters, i really don't think it's necessary to allow obscene/rude words to anyone in this game anyway. People need to be mature and keep in mind that there are some younger players, and it seems odd to separate the chat into a "swearing" group and a non-"swearing" group. In another light, young people arn't stupid, do you really want them open to a world of obscenities and rude words with a simple adjustment option? Also, this can put a barrior on conversations in graal. Sometime you need to reword something because it wrongly censors it, thinking your trying to avoid the censorship. The problem this causes is; if you were talking to someone with Clientsided Censorship, you wouldn't know that it censored it, and the other player may get thd wrong idea about what your trying to say. I know the last example is pretty circumstancial, but i can see that happening more then you think. I just think you guys should give this a little more thought. These are just some concerns i have. |
