This is the type of internet I deal with on a daily basis, and there's nothing I can do to fix it. I can't switch ISPs, there's no lines to fix.

You, on the otherhand, are most certainly dealing with a damaged line of SOME sort. Or if it's not that, then a TON of people torrenting off your wifi or something.

Call Comcast and they'll most certainly(even if they put up a bit of a fight) fix the issue eventually.

Either everyone is or it's my brother. I'll go check.
Edit: 11 torrents. We've had 50 at one point and the internet was faster. Comcast phone line doesn't work. They're going 'you're a ****** and we have to spoon feed you' mode.

It fluctuates from the post above to 1.0Mb/s with a 25ms ping. <- that's the best I'll ever get from it, and typically I have to wait for that to play online games else I don't even bother.

Torrenting bottlenecks the **** out of your connection, especially if you're doing a lot of seeding since bottlenecking your upload will pretty much bring your download speed to a crawl. But ping still suggests you have a damaged line somewhere. You can tracert google or something to see where the high ping occurs, which will show if it's on your end or somewhere along the lines.

But remember the best way to diagnose problems is to start eliminating culprits. As FP4 said above remove the factor of the router, hook directly to your PC. If it's still bad then it's not your router. Then also stop all seeding/programs that could slow it down. If it's still bad then it's not that. Then tracert... etc, etc.

I'll try that later. If I disconnect it, my brother would tie me up, disembowel me all while videotaping me and show it to me before killing me.

Apparently they have speeds of a GB / sec in Sweden for the same prices we have for 10 MB / Sec.

(So Google Fiber acts like it's a huge deal when it's really just a huge deal to us.)

Well, thats because sweden is such a small country so its not incredibly expensive. Something like that in the U.S. Would be monumental.  

Wow, that's pretty rough. My experience with Comcast is mostly positive when it works. I have had plenty of problems in the past on their end though, but they usually take care of it and credit my account. Comcast is INCREDIBLY expensive though, so I am also hoping for some competition from google in the near future.

Listen to what? There's no other options. Internet is a part of life so you can't just strike, and if you did you'd never convince enough people to do so to actually make them give a ****. There's nothing we, the consumer can ever do. It's up to competing services to offer better speeds at better rates, but that's ****ing hard as hell to do in the US when the very providers who you're trying to compete against own the lines you need to use to provide service.

Hopefully Google's new Fiber service will become successful enough so that even if it fails in the long-run, it gains enough attention to have your average American know they can get much better at a much cheaper rate.

$70 a month for... is it 1GB/s or 1TB/s? With that Internet, I could stream netflix on all my devices while torrenting lots of stuff at once :o

If it's actively seeding/uploading (Tip: reduce the amount of connections allowed, and upload rate) then it's probably maxing out their upstream bandwidth, which can really mess up pings. People who torrent should really use a seedbox, works way better for contributing to ratios on certain torrenting websites, and you can download things much more securely.  

My verizon is perfectly fine.

Verizon's customer service was bad also. I called them, was put on hold for an hour, and explained my problem. The problem was that whenever sone one called, my Internet momentarily turned off. All they did was move our DSL line to a closer server. It still doesn't work. I'm never calling them again.  

Got a new modem, took a bit to set up, but overall satisfied. People seem to have bad experiences with Comcast, but I find them decent.
