Because we are people. Not a thing. When you just call us a, "transgender" over a, "trans/transgender person" it's found offensive to quite a few people in the trans community.

From what I know, being transgender has many different meanings for people who actually are. It's delicate & difficult to please everyone with articulation. I saw someone transgender on Big Brother who didn't like being called transgender at all. I forget what she said she thought she was, but it was different than "transgender." I think it's just something you have to learn about for each individual for how they would like others to think/talk about it.

I'm saying it from my point of view, as a trans person, and I'm also going off what all my trans friends say. Being called a "transgender" over a "transgender person" feels kind of rude. I know some people feel differently about it, but it's how I feel about it.

Also, the trans bathroom issue is a huge deal for us. It may not seem so big to people who aren't transgender, but it's an issue I have to deal with on a day to day basis.

Uhhhhh?

People always use 'female' 'male' instead of 'female/male + person' so it shouldn't be any different with transgenders. Never once seen a male or female complain about it, just looks like a dumb thing to over react too.

It's just how common english works, in no way do people say it because they don't think you guys are people.

I understand how it could be considered offensive. If you say "Hey, that's a black!" That black guy might be offended. Same with saying "A gay," and some other labels. I'm not sure if it's because of the lack of controversy surrounding each term that decides if it would be offensive or not. Saying "An African American" doesn't sound offensive at all, while saying "A black" does.

I think people are too overly-sensitive a lot of the time, especially when it comes to race now. But with something as new as being transgender is to society, and it's revolution, I can understand being offended in that situation since I'm sure many people would say "A transgender" in order to display a lack of respect, or even lack of recognition of them being human beings too.

I totally get the bathroom problem but it's grammatically correct to call someone "transgender" over "transgender person" and the same is used for both male/females so I don't see the problem.

I don't know why anyone would say the transgender bathroom issue isn't a big deal. I would think basic human rights issues are always a big deal. No one needs to undermine one issue (the transgender issue) to prop up another issue (child slavery) like someone did earlier. That's just ignorant.

The same argument can (and is often) used for they/them/their pronouns. So are you going to disrespect someone's pronouns because it's grammatically incorrect? No? Well why disrespect a whole community, because it's grammatically incorrect.

It's not disrespectful at all, I'm just treating you like I would anyone of another gender. Why should you get special treatment?

Don't you think they have the right to define how they specifically should be described when you describe something more complex than simple male/female. Wouldn't calling someone fat be correct, yet still offensive? Wouldn't calling someone who is short, a midget, be correct, yet still offensive? There's no problem with calling someone the name they want to be called. It's not really your choice as to whether or not someone takes offense to being called by a certain name.

How is that treating them like everyone else? If they want to be called that, then that's fine, but if someone else who is transgender doesn't, then you in fact aren't treating them like everyone else by calling someone what they want, but not someone else.
